Anger Management

Anger Management classes are taught by a Certified Anger Management Specialist I, through the National Anger Management Association. The National Anger Management Association (NAMA) is the international professional association (represented in 26 countries) for the fields on anger management, crisis intervention and domestic violence.

The Anger Management classes are taught individually, in groups of 6-8, or in classes through eight-week sessions, that cover 12 modules. Through the use of a weekly anger management log and workbook, participants learn to take responsibility for their anger. This makes an anger management program a wonderful alternative to punitive incarcerations and fines which can be harmful to families and communities.

Modules focus on effective coping behavior to stop escalation and conflict resolution, as well as reducing levels of anger in provocative situations.

The Program offers skills and concepts including:

1. Understanding Anger

2. Ventilation Doesn’t Work

3. Anger is different from Aggression

4. Coping is better than Blaming

5. Cognitive Control Concepts

6. Identification and Working through Trigger Thoughts

7. Stress and Anxiety Management to Prevent Outbursts

8. Weekly Anger Log entries

Substance Use Prevention Education

The Living and Learning Youth Center provides Substance Use Prevention Education using the curriculum, Free Talk. The Free Talk curriculum is a six-session group based on MI, motivational interviewing approach. MI allows the client’s opinions and arguments for change to be the most important component of the discussion. The guiding approach of MI allows at-risk youth, who may be inherently distrustful of authority, to give voice to their frustration without disrupting or slowing down the therapeutic process.

Free Talk has six-sessions and youth can begin at any session and end with any session.

Session 1 Alcohol and other drugs, (AOD)

Session 2 Myths and realities about AOD

Session 3 Path of Choices

Juvenile Mediation

Mediation and Restorative Justice have become a critical component of comprehensive, community-based efforts to prevent violence and reduce crime.

In collaboration with the 4-H W.A.Y. program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Warren County, we provide mediation of dispute and restorative processes with youth. We can intervene successfully to prevent conflicts from escalating by providing people with the knowledge and skills needed to settle disputes peacefully.
